How to Ask for Testimonials Without Being Awkward: 12 Templates That Work
Proven email, WhatsApp, and DM templates for requesting testimonials from customers, with timing tips and practical response-rate guidance.
Testinora Team
The biggest reason businesses do not have testimonials is not that customers refuse to give them. It is that founders, freelancers, and operators feel awkward asking.
A good request feels like a thank-you note, not a demand. It references the result, gives the customer an easy path, and makes it clear that saying no is acceptable.
When to Ask
Timing matters more than the exact wording. Ask when the customer has just felt value and before the memory becomes vague.
- Right after successful project delivery.
- When a customer says something positive in email, chat, or a call.
- After the customer achieves a result they wanted.
- For SaaS, 7 to 14 days after onboarding if the user has reached the first value moment.
Avoid asking immediately after purchase, during a support issue, or at renewal time. Those moments either happen too early or make the request feel transactional.
The Anatomy of a Good Request
- Personal greeting. Use their name.
- Specific result. Mention the project, purchase, or outcome they experienced.
- Low friction. One link and a two-minute form. No account creation.
- No pressure language. Give them an easy out so the ask feels respectful.
- Gratitude. Thank them whether or not they respond.

Public testimonial-specific response-rate benchmarks are not standardized, so avoid promising universal percentages. What is well supported is the direction: shorter, more personal requests and follow-up improve response.
A BMJ systematic review of questionnaire response tactics found that shorter questionnaires, personalization, and follow-up contact all increased response odds. That maps cleanly to testimonial collection: fewer fields, a personal note, and one polite reminder. See the response-rate review.
Following Up
- Wait 4 to 5 days.
- Keep the reminder shorter than the original request.
- Acknowledge that they are busy.
- Include the link again.
- Stop after one follow-up unless they explicitly ask you to resend later.
